A collection of movies of solar flares (and stellar flare light curves)
The X9 flare of Oct 03, 2024 was one of the largest solar flares in the past two decades. This movie shows the evolution of the flare in the far-ultraviolet wavelengths, IRIS SJI 1330 (the contours map out the brigthest locations). The dominant emission line is singly ionized Carbon (C II). The whole movie takes place over about 15 minutes. The two ``ribbons'' spread apart and are the locations where electron beams deposit their energy catastrophically into the chromosphere. The loops that were filled with hot plasma early on eventually shine as they cool down through the temperatures of C II formation (~10,000 - 40,000 K). Note how the loops look to be more and more vertical (wrt the image orientation) as time progresses.
